Clermont Eye Institute Glaucoma Awareness 5K

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Glaucoma is a group of progressive eye diseases characterized by structural damage to the optic nerve and a gradual decline in visual function. It is a chronic condition typically develops without pain and results in irreversible vision loss — often beginning in the peripheral field and advancing toward central vision if left untreated. Because early stages frequently present with no noticeable symptoms, routine comprehensive eye examinations are critical for early detection.

Management of glaucoma focuses on lowering intraocular pressure and may include prescription eye drops, laser therapy, and/or surgical intervention, depending on disease severity. Established risk factors include a family history of glaucoma, advancing age, ocular trauma, mature cataracts, and the use of certain medications, such as corticosteroids.

If you notice any changes in your vision or have risk factors for glaucoma, we encourage you to see prompt evaluation. Contact Clermont Eye Institute at (352) 717-4080 to schedule a consultation, or reach out to your local optometrist or ophthalmologist for an initial screening.

  • This 5k is aimed to raise funds to support the following 4 beneficiaries:

    • CEI Scholarship Grant awarded to a graduating senior from one of the local high schools (ERHS, LMHS, SLHS) with interest in studying medicine in the future.

    • The Glaucoma Foundation in New York City.

    • Equipment contribution to Haiti based Ophthalmology residents training to be eye surgeons in Haiti.

    • Surgical fund available to local glaucoma patients that are under-insured or uninsured.

  • Our annual 5k will take place in downtown Clermont, specifically along the trail below lake Minneola, starting and ending at Victory Pointe. In total the trail all be 5 kilometers or 3 miles.

  • While we’d love for everyone to participate in the 5K, we understand that the scheduled date and time may not work for all. If you’re unable to join us, please consider supporting our Glaucoma Awareness efforts through the GoFundMe link below. Thank you for your generosity.
